Coaches' Corner

Coach David Ray is an icon in the Sierra Nevada Foothill soccer community and has been actively coaching for over 20 years. He is pleased to bring back his talented group of 2006 girls who are looking forward to finishing out their high school years together on the soccer field while creating some amazing memories! This will be David's second year coaching our 2006 Atomic Girls team and his 4th team with 49er United.
David grew up in Indiana playing soccer as soon as he learned to walk. He played club, high school, and college levels in his hometown. He started coaching in college and fell in love with teaching the game, as well as using it to teach life lessons. Over the years he has been blessed to coach at a number of different levels including youth club, boys & girls high school, and women's college. David enjoys people, sports, and the outdoors, so coaching has always been a fulfilling and rewarding aspect in his life. David served as the Club's Director of Coaching and Futsal Coordinator for the past five years before passing off the torch to spend more time at his "real job" as well as enjoying more time with his beautiful wife. They both have a heart for kids and love what coaching brings to their life as well as all those they get to meet through soccer. When asked why he enjoys coaching, David responded "I have a passion for the sport of soccer as well as teaching kids how to grow into honest, responsible, respectful adults. I enjoy using the sport I love to instill values in which I believe in those student athletes that cross my path every season I am blessed to coach." And we are truly blessed to have him as part of our great organization.

Yvette Giraudo is the amazing coach of our very own 2010 Girls "Blast". She grew up in Santa Rosa, took up soccer at an early age, and has been playing competitively as far back as she can remember. Her success on the field includes two national titles and four NCS championships with her high school varsity team. She parlayed that into a scholarship and four great years at William Jessup University. It was there where her leadership took center stage as she served as team Captain in her sophomore through senior campaigns. When asked why she likes to coach, Yvette responded "I thoroughly enjoyed all of the lessons I have learned on and off the field and I'm excited to bring that same passion I have for the game to the next level of young athletes."

We are super excited to have Hunter Swanson leading our 2006-2007 boys team. Hunter grew up in Colfax and has lived in the Auburn area his whole life. He fell in love with the beautiful game at a young age and fulfilled his childhood dreams of coaching when he was hired as the Colfax JV Head Coach. After the high school season ended, he found himself eager to get back on the pitch and training with the team. He is very excited and grateful for the opportunity to coach our 2006-2007 boys team this year!
His desire as a coach is to instill confidence in his players and to inspire them to love the game as much as he does. Above all, he hopes to be a mentor and a friend to the players on and off the field.

Check out this video by TOVO Founder, Todd Beane, son in law of Johann Cruyff.  It is a good interview about his philosophy and methodology.  One main point is soccer being about finding and exploiting space, not about kicking a ball.  it's "a masterful dance of spacial relationships."
